Hangover PreventionFrom ThisBlueWikiThis page is about my hangover prevention supplement combo. I can't take credit for the original idea, I heard about it from a friend. I have however done considerable subsequent research, both by doing such things as reading papers on glutathione production and also by drinking a lot and experimenting with how well the supplements work. This is not BS. There is science behind it. Yes, you can take this if you already have a hangover. It will probably help and, if you're keeping food down, won't hurt.
How to use itTake all the tablets with a full glass of orange juice (preferable) or water just before or very shortly after you start drinking. Continue drinking plenty of water along with your drinks during the evening. Be careful! These supplements are effective enough at preventing the early symptoms of hangover that you might be tempted to drink more than usual. (I'm a lightweight and it works that well for me.) What's in it?Here are the ingredients. If you want to know what they're for, read below.
What does all that stuff do?You may have heard a lot of things about preventing hangover. A lot of them might include drinking water and taking B vitamins. That's not a bad idea! You might also notice that once you're up and walking the next day, salty greasy food and orange juice can help. There's a reason for that, too. First, why do you get a hangover? Well, there is more than one reason. The three hangover causes targeted by this combo of supplements are acetaldehyde, electrolyte imbalance and dehydration. AcetaldehydeAcetaldehyde is a toxic chemical that is produced in your liver as it breaks down alcohol. The n-acetyl-cysteine is converted into glutathione in your body. Glutathione is a powerful antioxidant which may "scavenge" (inactivate) acetaldehyde, thus reducing the unpleasant effects of hangover such as nausea, etc. This is the primary mechanism by which this combo works. Take out the NAC and it won't work well at all. The Vitamin B1 (Thiamine) and the Vitamin C in the supplement combo work with glutathione to scavenge toxic acetaldehyde. The bilayer tablets from Jarrow Formulas® work a little extra magic. Some of the NAC is released right away when you take them, and the rest is slowly released over a 4 hour period. This prolongs the useful effects of the remedy. Same with the time-release B vitamin tablet. Electrolyte imbalanceSimply put, drinking a lot upsets the concentrations of various salts in your body. Not just table salt, but others including potassium, calcium and magnesium compounds. This can cause headache, twitches, muscle weakness and so forth. I've included a combo calcium/magnesium/zinc tablet to give you a boost in this department. I didn't include potassium tablets because it's commonly available in most foods, including french fries and orange juice! DehydrationIf you drink plenty of water throughout the evening, you can combat dehydration, another cause of hangover which can lead to headache, dry mouth, thirst, etc. |
