in firefox:
1. Type about:config into the address bar
2. Change the entries as follows:
Set network.http.pipelining to true
Set network.http.proxy.pipelining to true
Set network.http.pipelining.maxrequests to some number like 30.
3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it
nglayout.initialpaint.delay and set its value to 0.
I did this and the speed of web browsing about tripled.
(this only helps people with fast broadband connections or
people at work with a fast net connection )

The cool, and maybe overwhelming, thing about Firefox is the ability to tweak
it with extensions and changing default settings. There are a bunch available
on the internet if yo' interested. For example:

I just have to remember everything I tweak when I install Firefox on another
computer.
